The aim of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) is to systematically catalogue research data, ensure its long-term preservation and make it internationally accessible in accordance with the FAIR principlesExternal link . Within the framework of the NFDI, which is funded by the federal and state governments, 26 discipline-specific consortia and one consortium for basic services in the NFDI are currently being funded for an initial period of up to 5 years.
The funded consortia were selected in three rounds of calls. On 26 June 2020 the Joint Science Conference (GWK) decided for the funding of nine NFDI consortia from the first application round (press releaseExternal link). The funding decision by the GWK on the applications for the second round took place in June 2021 (press releaseExternal link). In November 2022, in the third and final round of calls, decisions were made to fund a further seven consortia and one basic service (press releaseExternal link).
The second funding phase, initially only for the consortia of the first call, began on 30 September 2023 with the receipt of interim reports by the DFG. Follow-up proposals from the first call consortia must be submitted to the DFG by 6 August 2024. Decisions on further funding will not be made until summer 2025. A detailed timetable can be found on the DFG's information pageExternal link.
Since 1 March 2020 Prof Dr York Sure-Vetter is the director of the NFDI e.V.. The directorate supports the consortia in organizational and networking efforts. Further information regarding the directorate can be found on the official NFDI websiteExternal link.
Many members and working groups of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena are working on several NFDI consortia from all three rounds. For a comprehensive list, please see the table below.
