Whether interview transcripts, survey data or medical studies - personal data is omnipresent in research. Its secure and legally compliant handling is essential to protect the rights of those affected and to ensure scientific integrity. This workshop offers participants an introduction to key concepts of data protection in research data management (RDM), including the nuances of personal data, important data protection terminology, anonymization, pseudonymization and the distinction between data protection and data security. The focus is on responsibly handling of personal data throughout the research data lifecycle.
Another aspect of the workshop addresses on justifying collecting and processing personal data: Data protection information and declarations, legal bases for legitimization (e.g. consent and contractual basis), the principles of purpose limitation and the principle of data minimization will be covered. Finally, participants will receive practical tips and insights into suitable tools for anonymization and pseudonymization as well as principles for the secure storage of data.
