What does the zedif fellowship offer?

The zedif fellowship offers one year of individual mentoring regarding digital aspects of your research project. The mentoring includes:

  • regular meetings with scientific experts from our team and
  • where needed, limited collaboration efforts within your project

Who can benefit from this offer?

Every researcher at Friedrich Schiller University Jena can become a zedif fellow, provideded they plan to stay at the university for the duration of the fellowship. This requirement focusses the target group primarily on researchers with least the level of PhD student, but in general the offer is open to researchers from the level of Master student all the way up to that of faculty.

How can I become a zedif fellow?

Each year we offer zedif fellowships to only a very limited number of researchers. Applications are collected by email. In order to apply, send us the following two pages as one file in pdf format:

  1. a one-page project description, understandable by non-experts in your field, including a description of the digital aspects you would like to focus on during your fellowship, as well as
  2. a one-page CV, focusing on items relevant for the application.

We will select successful zedif fellows based on the following criteria:

  • the general application quality
  • the spread of research topics of prospective fellows (increasing discipline diversity)
  • plans regarding open data and open source (fostering open science)
  • fit of project plans and expertise of zedif mentors

We offer and explicitly recommend to discuss your plans with us before an application. One the one hand, some of the selection criteria are possibly hard to assess by individual researchers, on the other hand especially academically young researchers might lack experience with applications. The application steps are:

  1. Consultation regarding an application (optional; Contact)
  2. Application via email attachment as one pdf document, sent to zedif@uni-jena.de
  3. Review and possibly acceptance by zedif.

Are there deadlines?

We open the call for zedif fellowships once a year. The next application deadline is the 30th of May 2025. We plan to review applications within roughly a month. Fellowships will start on the 1st of September 2025, for a duration of one year.
